Compeer Chautauqua matches caring, sensitive, and trained volunteers with mental health service recipients in one-to-one friendship relationships.
Compeer means equal or peer, colleague, equal in rank or in our case, a close friend.
Loneliness, failure, fear and loss of self-esteem are universal experiences of those who suffer from a mental illness.
A caring friend can help restore joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both.
Compeer Chautauqua is sponsored by Southern Tier Environments for Living, a mental health service agency.
Established in 1989, Compeer Chautauqua serves only Chautauqua County residents in Western New York.
In 1973, The affiliate program, Compeer, Inc., began operations in Rochester, New York.
Twelve community volunteers started what has since expanded into over 100 programs in the United States, Canada,
and Australia. Compeer has received many awards and recognition from the American Psychiatric Association and National Institute of Mental Health.
